What
The Global Remote Work Index (GRWI) originates from NordLayer's vision that cybersecurity should enable—not restrict—different ways of working. The preference for remote work has risen since the Covid-19 pandemic, along with the risk of workers exposing themselves to various direct and indirect cyber threats. As organizations face scaling and integration challenges when implementing secure remote access, the need for increased awareness about cybersecurity for remote work has become more pressing in the post-Covid landscape.

Methodology
The GWRI is built on data from 108 countries, analyzing the suitability of key work and life-related aspects. Drawing on the experiences of individuals seeking international remote work opportunities, we developed a guiding theoretical framework that consists of four distinct dimensions:
- Cyber safety, which encompasses infrastructure, response, and legal measures;
- Economic safety, including tourism attractiveness, English proficiency, cost of living, and healthcare;
- Digital and physical infrastructure, such as internet quality, affordability, e-infrastructure, e-government, physical infrastructure, and co-working spaces;
- Social safety, which covers overall safety, personal rights, and inclusiveness subscores.
Data is exclusively sourced from recognized and credible organizations, including international entities like the UN and the World Economic Forum, respected publications such as The Economist, and reputable knowledge platforms like Oxford Insights. We prioritize the most recent data to keep our index current and relevant, which is why it predominantly comes from 2022 and 2023.
Result
The Work from Anywhere (WFA) policy enables individuals to explore the globe while balancing work and social life. To keep up with these changes, the GRWI serves as a guidebook for both employers and employees. It reveals that not all traveler-favored destinations are equally suitable for workcation, e.g. while countries in Southeast Asia are popular getaway destinations, they rank lower than most European countries.
